Issue No. 93 of Your Weekly Staff Meeting is a reminder from Issue No. 92—the power of repetition. And this second reminder: to review the books I’ve recommended in back issues, visit the archives here. Reminder: The Power of Repetition, Repetition, Repetition
Last week, I gave you a leadership alert! Before you read one more book, attend one more seminar, or even listen to one more sermon, read this book—and read it four times!
Authors Ken Blanchard, Paul J. Meyer and Dick Ruhe suggest on your fourth read through a book, you do it with a learning partner. So this week (to heed their insightful counsel), I’m recommending their book again, in case you missed it last week. Read it once, twice, three times—and then a fourth time for serious learning and application. Try it!

“The gap between knowing and doing,” declares one of the characters in this short business story, “is probably wider than the gap between ignorance and knowledge.” The gap solution: the power and practice of repetition, repetition, repetition. Plus, “people should learn less information more often, rather than learn more information less often.” Read fewer books, they preach, and read them not once, but four times. Follow-up seminar attendance with a weekly one-hour coaching call for six weeks.
The Blanchard bottom line: this is a foundational book that will impact everything you read and learn—from this day forward—for the rest of your leadership/learning life. It’s a must, must, must, read, read, read.
Your Weekly Staff Meeting Questions:
1. How big is the “knowing-doing gap” in your local church? How much of this is because the leaders don’t set the bar high enough?
2. What are the causes of the “knowing-doing gap” in our organization?
Insights from Mastering the Management Buckets: 20 Critical Competencies for Leading Your Business or Nonprofit
To begin working on the “knowing-doing gap,” read the introduction to my new book, Mastering the Management Buckets. In the “Buckets 101” discussion, I describe four levels of management knowledge.
You must mentor your team members so they become life-long learners in all 20 buckets, moving from Level 1 to Level 4 when possible. No single person, of course, will master every competency, but your team members must collectively master the core competencies in order for your organization to reach its maximum potential. Here are the four levels:
• Level 1: I don’t know what I don’t know.
• Level 2: I know what I don’t know.
• Level 3: I have an action plan to address what I know I don’t know.
• Level 4: I am knowledgeable and effective in this core competency and can mentor others.
Where are your team members? Download the Management Buckets Self-Assessment Tool to begin the process as you look at all 20 buckets.
